The importance of my ‘She-Shed’
Benefits of having a creative sanctuary:
-
A Space For Me: Having a dedicated area for creating means I can leave out ongoing projects and come back to them, which minimises breaking the flow. No-one else is bothered by my mess…I can decide the rules!
-
Stress Relief: Having a quiet space to enjoy some time alone to unwind can reduce stress and calm the mind. I thrive on periods of solitude, to centre myself, recharge my energy and find calm. I think if I’d had even a bit of that when my kids were young I would’ve had more mental resilience and felt calmer.
-
Increased Productivity: I find I can be more absorbed and productive in a space without distractions, away from the hustle and bustle of the house and the household chores, I don’t have to look at the laundry pile…there is a sense of going to work.
-
Connection with Nature: As soon as I step on the path towards my studio I enter the wilder end of our garden and feel calmer. Surrounded by the sounds of the birds and tree leaves rustling in the breeze, I find the sound of rain on the roof soothing when clouds burst. The sunlight shining through the windows. Being surrounded by green trees and rural views makes me feel more connected to nature
-
Personal Touches: Making a space my own, having it how I want it and adding personal touches that speak to me or hold memory, add to the feeling of it being my space. Surrounded by my art, inspiration mood board, books & journals, a favourite chair, mini altar, paintings in progress, tools and materials makes it a happy place for
~ We all shine in different spaces and that’s ok, it’s important to recognise what makes us sparkle and what dulls our shine. I think it’s also important to recognise when the people around you are out of their natural habitat and not feeling themselves…so as to approach with empathy ~
“ When you’re in your Element, your sense of time changes. If you’re doing something that you love, an hour can feel like five minutes; if you are doing something that you do not, five minutes can feel like an hour. ”
